Xiangqi Puzzles One Move Kill Ping Loong Wong 9781546549178 Books Reviews

An auspicious beginning to the series, ONE MOVE KILL is a thoroughly entertaining -- and edifying -- introduction into endgame mating scenarios for Chinese "Elephant Chess".

For a veteran (International) Chess player of over forty years, learning the fundamentals of Xiangqi took no more than a few minutes, but certain matters caused concern for this reviewer, namely, the phenomenon that, in the Chinese incarnation of the game, the horses (i.e. knights) cannot vault over impediments. Additionally, the General, who, being unable to "castle" to a safer, more peripheral location, remains very much vulnerable in the "Palace" in the centre of the first rank. As a form of mechanical compensation, however, the General, weak in the opening and mid-game, is oftimes a piece of paramount importance in endgame mating configurations, this fact being driven home repeatedly in the present work's specimens.

The Cannon -- the Chinese contribution to this family of strategy games -- is a challenging mechanic to learn of, and, with the exception of the occasional Flying General glad to quit his stiffling, beleaguered palatial estates to lay hands upon his distant counterpart, is the only piece capable of saltation. Doubled cannons (best called a "battery") are extremely deadly take care that such massed artillery are yours and that you are not at the receiving end of the enemy's! A Cannon is also artfully employed by pinning two enemy pieces against the enemy General, as, if the forgetful opponent moves one away, the remainder becomes the Paotai (Cannon Platform or Cannon Mount). And a last piece of wisdom one cannot capture the Paotai without becoming the Paotai! Before we depart this topic, it is one of the great tragedies of our world that the Master of Artillery himself, Napoleon, had no acquaintance with Xiangqi, as, it can be stated with utmost surety, that he would have become fully enamoured of this game's incorporation of those dread "mouths of fire".

A small number of typos, barely worth mention, mar the otherwise solid text. The most puzzling of the errors is that for the very last problem, 15.60 which is given as "P+=5" -- impossible since White (i.e. Hong, or "Red", as it is called in Chinese), has not a single pawn among his dwindling forces.

It is a terrible shame that this marvelous game, a very close cousin to Chess, is virtually unknown in the Occident (being of even murkier renown than Weiqi, a boardgame of remotest, fog-draped antiquity), and also a shame that there is only a modest number of books comprehensible to the Anglophone sphere. For the rectification of this lamentable deficit, it is imperative to institute a project whereby the vast literature on the game in Chinese is digitised to make the original texts accessible to translators, thereby expanding the public awareness of this engrossing intellectual pastime.

The author is to be commended for his contributions to the literature of this game, and is heartily encouraged to pen more works which can enlighten the Western mind.

And now...onward to TWO MOVES KILL!
This book is a great compilation of basic one-move "kills" (i.e., checkmates) in Xiangqi. The editing and formatting, however, is not very good and not user-friendly. The text displays four puzzles per page, making it difficult to zoom in on the desktop app or on the device (it's easier on a tablet app, though). Also, the solutions are not linked and are in a chapter by themselves at the end of the book, making it difficult to check solutions quickly.

Still, the author has done a great job compiling one-move checkmates, giving English-speaking Xiangqi players a chance to practice and improve their tactical vision.
His Xiangqi Puzzles are a great collection to practice with. They vary as to degree of difficulty. No other such resource in English that I am aware of.
